Being an active member of the animation community is the most valuable asset new teachers can offer. Sharing experiences is what it's all about.

I love teaching (at MassArt) b/c it's great to see how the next crop of artists approach materials and the art of animation.

Keep up the interesting posts!Dave Schlafmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11419371861050567457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738814364413384768.post-35308468169853921202009-04-14T13:57:00.000-07:002009-04-14T13:57:00.000-07:00great post once again dave...I second just about e...great post once again dave...I second just about everything phil said (except the part about him being under qualified) teaching is something i've been wanting to do for a while, and speaking to your class only made me more excited about the prospect of doing it in the future. Thanks for the sound advice.Danny Hyneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03344487222010414968noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738814364413384768.post-5317456793886378372009-04-14T10:34:00.000-07:002009-04-14T10:34:00.000-07:00I've been thinking about teaching, but I always fe...I've been thinking about teaching, but I always feel funny about what I have to offer. I know that I'm not necessarily the most qualified, but I really feel passionate about my own continuing education, and I think teaching would be a great way to mutually experience this with others and open up the conversation even more.

I see teaching as something that I'd like to be able to do for the rest of my life. I think that the idea that no matter where I am in my own career, I would be surrounded by people with fresh eagerness. And that could constantly remind me of why I love being an artist. Or... maybe I'll get stuck with a crappy bunch of students :)Uncle Philhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01782789250885810557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738814364413384768.post-36807201735877096842009-04-13T14:50:00.000-07:002009-04-13T14:50:00.000-07:00I've been teaching illustration on and off for yea...I've been teaching illustration on and off for years back home.

I love it.Elliot Cowanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15952897418341461593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738814364413384768.post-68811029444511067762009-04-13T14:19:00.000-07:002009-04-13T14:19:00.000-07:00i second chris on guest speaking. i was at a fest...i second chris on guest speaking. i was at a festival recently that brought filmmakers into the classroom of a local middle school. One class of 5th graders i spoke with possessed a level of energy rarely seen in my college courses.

i appreciated their honesty too. upon telling one youngster that I had animated on a well-known preschool show, he unashamedly admitted, "I used to like that show, but not anymore." The same kid said my short was "okay."

i'm sure teaching at any level offers similar humbling and enlightening experiences worth their weight in gold.

my favorite question was by far, "If you made a movie that made, say, 20 billion dollars around the world, how much would you make?"

this child has a brilliant future in entertainment law.stephenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15584521465654665967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738814364413384768.post-74556749099068415582009-04-13T14:01:00.000-07:002009-04-13T14:01:00.000-07:00Great post, I've found all of these things to ...Great post, I've found all of these things to be true! And it's a cliche, but true, that as a teacher you learn quite a bit yourself. Preparing lessons has given me a great reason to dig in to all kinds of online animation resources & books in a way I might not have otherwise.Tomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05634180933858521578noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-738814364413384768.post-35602044422612226502009-04-13T12:04:00.000-07:002009-04-13T12:04:00.000-07:00Chris,You bring up a good point that guest speakin...Chris,

You bring up a good point that guest speaking and guest teaching/subbing are also good entry ways into teaching. Also appearing on panels, and doing on-stage interviews and Q and A's aren't bad.David B.
